When The Cameras Are Off

Cory Jones an Entrepreneur and Guidance Counselor on yesterday came to the ECC Leadership Bootcamp and share information about his new app HooDat Chat. This app is a privacy and protection app. The premise is when you send a text you don't see the words on the screen, but when you scroll your finger across the text block there is a magnifying glass that shows you the words. Also there is a snatch back function in which you can snatch back the text that you've sent already.

So, he spoke to 12 of my students about the thought process of starting a business. He talked about your why (the reason for starting a business). He talked about your how (how are you going to start and sustain your business). However, when the battery on my phone died from recording on Facebook live Cory went on to share a great life experience. Cory is currently a guidance counselor and he talked about an experience with a family who is one of his students. He shared how they couldn't get to first period gym on time. They had excuse after excuse after excuse. In sharing this explanation he explained that his heart and aim is for young men to succeed. Especially as it pertains to them understanding the process of work. He said, "there is no excuses".

However, these young men gave them. First, excuse they couldn't wash up on time because there is too many people in the house. So Jones said, "Take a shower before you go to sleep". They whined and complained, and said that's not feasible. Next he said, "get up between 3 or 4am in the morning and so they can take their shower". But they didn't want to do that. So, come to find out that they got evicted from there house and they moved further from the school. So, Cory empathized with them but wanted to help them to find a solution. He said, "in life people will not have sympathy for everything you go through. He said this because, when he grew up in Harlem he didn't have a father, his mom was on drugs and one day he found his Mom's furniture on the corner and his clothes in a shopping cart. His family was evicted from their apartment and he was homeless. He asked a critical question. Which was; Did that stop him from going to school? Answer was No! Next Question; Did he get to school on time? The answer was, "YES"! So did these students get the message. NO! They have to be in high school another year because they couldn't get to gym on time. His point was to my students was to use your time wisely to produce the best results for yourself.
