OccupY THe Schools

(As seen in the blog) "FROM FAILURE TO FINISH"

This year, 2015 I’ve been appointed Vice President of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of The K.I.N.G. Movement, (Knowledge, Inspiration and Nurture through God) where the Honorable Chris Broussard is National and NJ Chapter president. With K.I.N.G I had the opportunity to present an idea – men walking children to school to show there are men who love and care for our children and the community. I presented the idea to Chris and the Mayor of Newark, the Honorable Ras Baraka. Both of them loved it. Chris added the idea that we should talk to the kids and have an assembly to encourage them. This simple idea has now grown into a program called “Occupy the Schools Newark.’’ Through OTS, men of all nationalities and various professions perform the simple acts of greeting children as they walk to school and encouraging them about life and career choices. We do this on the first Monday of every month at six public high schools in Newark. The Occupy Schools Newark program has partnered with other mentoring programs such as President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Newark, The Future Project, and Big Brother Big Sister. This all started with an idea and an opportunity.
